The Sustainable Data Lake
Rightly considered, the “Data Lake” is not a technology as much as it is an approach to acquiring and managing data and providing access to that data for analysts and information workers. It embodies an approach that is almost the antithesis of the traditional Data Warehouse – and for good reasons. The Data Warehouse has earned a reputation as expensive, difficult to maintain and difficult to enhance. Whether based on a Kimball or an Inmon approach, it requires the tight integration of multiple data sources, necessitating layers of complex data integration and transformation. The Data Lake should be considered as complementary to the Data Warehouse rather than as a replacement for it.
